Asian Art Biennale was conceived by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy with the assumption of continuity and change and the co-existence of modernity and tradition in the arts of Asian countries. In this era of globalization, many of the Asian artists are no more confined within the limits of their national boundaries. Rather a large number of them are now engaged in work in Europe and America. Despite this, the individual characteristics of these artists can be felt in their artworks. For the last two decades, by virtue of their creative genius, Asian artists have strengthened their footings more than ever before in the international art arena. It is understood, however, that in the societies in Asia the cultural landscape is unique and is in a state of flux. Technologically, Asian countries may be late-comers in the global scene (though a few have overtaken the west or are at par), but in cultural terms they have rich traditions based on a collective ethos and age-old aesthetic practices. The fact that everyday activities of these societies are embedded in culture and that there is, mostly, no separation between art and craft makes the cultural tradition of Asian countries vibrant and varied. Artists in Asia have been influenced by this symbolizes of art and craft, and use elements of traditional art and craft as motifs even as they expose themselves to the modern trends in art and culture of the west. It is, therefore, not in a geographical sense that Asian art becomes meaningful and significant as a category; rather the ferment and flux in which it exists and the mutual accommodation with the west in which it thrives, give to Asian art a special identity. Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh, since its beginning in 1981, has attempted to display the kaleidoscope of various artistic endeavours of our time in which continuity and change come together. The geographical parameter is important only in a generic sense and also for identification of sponsorship in this pioneering venture. It was inevitable that with time other regions that share, more or less, the same artistic impulses and face the same challenge of forging an identity of their own, would be included in the exhibition as has happened in recent years. Asian Art Biennale is proud to showcase the artistic heritage and contemporary art in Asia. It is the firm belief of the organizers that with each Biennale, a new milestone will have been crossed showing progress achieved by established and young artists through their work that reflects continuity and change and embrace modernity along with a commitment to tradition.
