    Information

The exhibition Carmen Amaya 1963. Photographs by Colita and Julio Ubiña opens at La Virreina Image Centre on 8 May 2013.

This tribute to mythical Catalan flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya features photographs by Colita and Julio Ubiña that capture her life and dancing during her final year. Ranging from reportage to pure portraits, these highly expressive images are accentuated by a characteristic 1960s style with striking contrasts between light and shadow.

This exhibition forms part of the celebrations being held throughout Carmen Amaya Year, promoted by the Catalan government to mark the centenary of the performer’s birth and the fiftieth anniversary of her death. It is also part of Circuit 2013. Fotografia Documental Barcelona, a new photography event that will make Barcelona the capital of documentary photography in June and July 2013.

The exhibition reveals different moments in Carmen Amaya’s artistic and personal life: after her arrival at Barcelona airport from Mexico and her return to the Somorrostro neighbourhood where she was born, we see her on the shoot for Rovira Beleta’s legendary film Los Tarantos and her final performance at the Palau de la Música Catalana, followed by a visit to the Costa Brava and some of her private haunts before her death on 19 November 1963 at her house in Begur.

Carmen Amaya 1963. Photographs by Colita and Julio Ubiña is on at Virreina LAB until 7 July 2013.
