- Diana Michener
Diana Michener is well known for the delicate way she documents difficult subjects. Her photographic series, begun in the early 1980s, are replete with ethereal, magical images.
In the large format prints made over the last decade presented at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Diana Michener explores the darker side of love.
Although undeniably figurative, her photographs stand at the frontier of abstraction. These black and white images of intertwined figures are intentionally ambiguous; they even possess a degree of violence. The artist applies blurring, graininess, camera shake and wide-angle shots to the study of the nude, so that these sensuous pictures also conjure up a feeling of anxiety and sometimes of impending menace. Like timeless stories, Diana Michener’s photographs explore complex themes and engage the viewer in a troubling process of introspection.
