Georges Méliès (1861-1938) was a draughtsman, illusionist, theatre director, actor, set designer and technician. He was also the producer, director and distributor of over five hundred films made between 1896 and 1912.

For almost twenty years, Méliès was the undisputed master of the fantasy genre and cinematic trick effects, and his contribution was fundamental: he introduced dreams, magic and fiction to cinema when it was still in its infancy and almost all films were documentaries. Méliès virtually created cinema by combining the universe of Robert-Houdin with the cinematography of Marey and the Lumière brothers.   A wizard of special effects, Méliès applied techniques associated with the art of illusion and magic lanterns to film—everything from pyrotechnics and optical effects to horizontal and vertical wipes, stop motion, dissolving views, multiple exposure, and montage and colour effects. One has the impression that this virtuoso of technique invented and used every trick in the film repertoire.

This exhibition will show that the genesis of the Mélièsian world lies in the very origins of cinema. Thanks to the impressive collection of films, drawings, equipment, costumes and objects held by the Cinémathèque Française, visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the great diversity of Méliès work and explore his cultural, aesthetic and technical roots. Where does Méliès come from? How did he fashion his extraordinary universe? What were his sources of inspiration? This show answers all these questions.

Méliès’s work remains relevant today, particularly in relation to the output of major Hollywood filmmakers, because—as he said himself in 1933—“Who can live without féerie—without a little fantasy?”
