InformationThe exhibition The invention specifically focuses on the development of geometric abstraction in Latin America, covering a time frame that begins in the thirties and concludes in the seventies of the twentieth century.
Although this type of abstract art developed initially in Europe and Russia, some South American artists took it as a language of cosmopolitan and progressive future from the modern cities of Montevideo, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Caracas. Geometric abstraction thus becomes a vehicle of expression for the emergence of a continent that explored the mid-twentieth century political and cultural ideas.
The exhibition narrative is structured around the idea of artistic intention, considering the obvious visual works as capable of expressing different ideas about what can and must be the art and the role it plays in society. Many of the authors of these papers dealt with theories that kept writing about these issues in articles, reviews and polemical manifestos which claimed the features of a new artistic language, despite its universal aspirations, first established a different meaning in relationship with each context.
The works that make up this exhibition are grouped outside place and year of birth, according to criteria of affinity of the authors from whom understand that closeness in the artistic use of language does not necessarily result in a common purpose to the objective of his art. All these works are from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, one of the most important in Latin American contemporary art that refers to the Reina Sofia Museum has established a collaboration agreement.
