    Information

A Museum of Gesture, by Sabel Gavaldon, is the project selected in the curatorial project category within the framework of BCN Producció 2013.

Sabel Gavaldon (Barcelona, 1985) is a curator and researcher currently based in London. In 2012, he completed the Curating Contemporary Art programme at the Royal College of Art with the support of a graduate fellowship awarded by ‘La Caixa’ Foundation. Recent curatorial projects include ‘Ritual Without Myth’ (Royal College of Art, 2012); ‘Notes for an Exhibition’ (Crate Studio and Project Space, 2011); ‘Lighting Rig: Intervention by Sam Ely and Lynn Harris’ (Department 21, 2011); and ‘Lying on Rocks, Sitting in Windows, Standing on Chairs’ (RCA, 2011).

A Museum of Gesture brings together the work of contemporary artists who approach gesture as a political marker as well as a space of resistance. Strictly speaking, this is not an exhibition of performance. Instead, it addresses the interdependence between gesture and its various media incarnations, be they in the form of oral accounts, photographs or filmic documents. The title of the exhibition is an allusion to the visionary idea of creating a ‘Museum of Gesture and Speech’ (Musée du Geste et de la Parole) in the early twentieth century, a project that was deeply involved in the European colonial enterprise. Against this background, the artists in the show examine a variety of subcultural experiences by drawing attention to their gestures, bodily codes and modes of self-presentation, while raising the question of how to retain their specificity within a ‘minor’ history.
