- Valeria Maculan
We are most pleased to present "The itinerants", the first exhibition by the Argentinian artist Valeria Maculan (Buenos Aires, 1968) at the Magda Bellotti gallery.
In "The itinerants" Valeria Maculan explores the idea of ornamental, on two fronts, the cultured and the merely banal. Maculan is interested in immersing the viewer in doubt, questioning the limits to where our cultural beliefs determine taste and aesthetic experience. As the artist says, "I mix nature and artifice straining the boundaries between opposite situations."
The artist acts as a collector of images, like a fisherman pulling and pushing his nets on urban seas. Adds, subtracts and fragments the image, seeking to provoke a disturbance of vision and a reflection on the continuous shift of the boundaries between the seen and the unseen.
In her latest works, Maculan has chosen murals as well as paintings made from printed fabric remnants, which incorporate several other elements as tape or paper, with a strong oriental character both in the composition and the finish end. These are canvases that can be rolled, perfectly portable.
Maculan has been living in Madrid for two years. Artists wander from one place to the other and there are no boundaries. "The itinerants" refers to the wandering artists in the XXI century.
