The Catalan photographer has won one of the world’s most important international awards awarded by the Hasselblad Foundation.
Joan Fontcuberta is a world famous conceptual photographer, well as a writer, editor, curator and professor, whose work has achieved global recognition for Spanish photography. Bo Myhrman, director of the Hasselblad Foundation, has sought to reaffirm the selection of the Fontcuberta as the winner of the 2013 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography, describing him as "one of the most inventive contemporary photographers, with over thirty years of constant work, with an original work ".
Being recognized with one of the most important international awards for photographic creation, Fontcuberta becomes part of the list of the masters of photography alongside of renowned personalities such as Cartier-Bressen or Richard Avedon.
Fontcuberta's work is situated in a territory halfway between reality and fiction. As the Foundation has affirmed, "his work is distinguished by original and playful conceptual approaches” that analyse the conventions of photography and explore the means of representation. His visual imagination composes a universe where the concepts of truth and fiction are strongly linked, concepts which uses as a means to reflect the doubt and mistrust of authority.
In his work, Fontcuberta also questions the veracity of photography, incorporating the profound impact of digital manipulation in contemporary photographic creation in the core of his speech. In his works and projects, he presents the multitude of photo-based media, mixing many different formats used by the media and public communication strategies. With biting humour and a sharp wit, Fontcuberta provokes and constantly surprises the viewer, presenting an array of perspectives brought together by an impeccable technique.
Fontcuberta's commitment to photography is also reflected in his facets as a writer, teacher and curator. For the Foundation, through the activity undertaken in these areas, the photographer "has been a hugely inspirational figure to the youngest generations."
