Lieko Shiga’s work is right on the border between dreams and reality. Her fantastic images represent a combination of local myths and the everyday stories of ordinary people that evoke personal memories, feelings and experiences. Her latest exhibition in Foam Amsterdam, Canary, is a reflection of the photographs she took in Australia, Singapore and northern Japan and the locals she met there.

Shiga creates surrealistic, fantastic and often dramatic images that form a dark and dreaming world. The photographs reflect her personal fantasy, as well as her distinctive use of light and colour, and the deep roots of Japanese folkloric tradition.

Shiga’s work method is very intimate and introspective, usually involving a deep connexion with the model, which she usually interviews. She looks for a personal approach, usually asking questions about specific places, personal experiences and anecdotes. Another requisite is that she must visualize the image much before creating it, almost by entering another existential state, stepping out of herself in order to see the image before she even touches the camera.

The 50 works that make up Canary are presented in various formats. The exhibition will also include a film with the same name. The film will present the artist’s work in a different way, accompanied by an intriguing soundtrack by Yuta Segawa.
