The Austrian artist Mario Dilitz is what we could call a modern day craftsman. His life size wooden sculptures are created following traditional techniques, but Dilitz infuses the figures with a truly contemporary spirit.

Dilitz is capable of recreating the human form and giving it expression and true body language. His figures explore contemporary issues with an extreme level of intensity, causing a strong contrast between the aesthetic beauty and the content represented. Each figure seems to explore true human nature, without disregarding its constant contradictions, its darker side and its fragility.

The complex essence of human nature and its infinite contradictions is expressed though the figures, through their pose, the elements that complete them, their facial and body expression that together give the figures a life-like presence. But this conceptual intensity is also shown through the materials and technique. Dilitz creates his sculptures through a process of destruction and construction of layers of laminated wood, which he reveals by leaving its joints and the red glue between exposed at plain sight.
