Samuel Gomez's drawn dystopias
New York City - OCT 28, 2013

The artist Samuel Gomez, who currently lives and works in New York City, is an expert storyteller. Gomez's mastery of drawing techniques is beyond ordinary, something that is obvious when confronted with one of his extremely detailed, large scale drawn murals.

His artwork has a very personal style with a hybrid of surreal-steampunk aesthetics that translate in dark and alluring murals of machine-like figures. Each artwork reflects his source of inspiration, normally universal semiotics and contemporary allegories of issues related to science, socioeconomic, automation and sustainability.

The steampunk aesthetics offers a perfect contrast to Gomez's up front humour, which he incorporates into the intricate narratives he constructs. Not a single element is out of place in the extremely elaborate murals, where each allegory presents a dystopian future, seemingly inevitable and where event and outcome are intimately linked.
