One of the most recognized contemporary visual artists from Brazil, Adriana Varejão, exhibits for the first time in the austral city, a selection of forty works that expand various periods of her career from the '90s to the present.

This temporal variant causes the result to be heterogeneous, winding, but all the pieces bear the stamp of someone seeking to provoke. This is why the title of the show is so fitting, it deals with marginal stories where miscegenation, the corporeal and visceral, but also the geometrical and symmetries, embody a particular polyphony.

These works interpellate, mostly, because of the sense of chaos inspired by colonial American cultural identity in Brazilian history, folklore, icons linked to ethnicity and nature.

The variants of meanings and disciplines can be seen -since the carioca artist alternates painting, sculpture, drawing and photography- the materials are also a game of juxtaposition between cloth, oil, aluminum, plaster, ceramics and animal skin.

Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the exhibition installed in the top floor of Malba, is organized chronologically and presents the most significant series of the artist: "unknown land", "Proposal for a catechesis", "Languages and incisions", "Ruins charqui "," Seas and Tile "," Saunas "and" Plates ".

Given this multiplicity, the visitor will encounter corroded landscapes, open wounds, but also large plates that show the true wealth of Brazil: Amazonian nature, prints with mulatto aquatic nymphs, and even self-portraits of the artists in diverse ethnic versions, as Chinese, African and Aboriginal. On the other hand, identities linked to religion burst but they do not escape a scatological and carnal treatment; large murals evoke Portuguese art with its distinctive tiles and red tongues, alive, winding with a loud cry that seems to be impossible to overlap.

Her work is part of numerous international coleccions, such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Tate Modern in London, Inhotim Centro de Arte Contemporânea in Brazil, Fondation Cartier pour l`art contemporain in Paris and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de San Diego, among others. 

This oportunity -with the collaboration of the Museu de Arte Moderna de Sao Paulo and the Museu de Arte Moderna do Río de Janeiro- it was possible to reunite works that belong to public and private coleccions, resulting in a complex and representative installation of the issues that are key in the unique work of Adriana Varejão.

This exhibition is an unmissable visual and tactile explosion that crosses countless emotions. Stories in the margins paradoxically lies in the center of the agenda of contemporary art, until June 10 in Buenos Aires.
