Tiago Casanova takes us on a journey through personal spaces
Lisbon - AUG 30, 2013

"When a house or a space belong to us, or when we have an intimate affinity with it, the elements that compose that architecture, like the decoration, the textures, the patterns or the objects, generally have two distinct characteristics: some of the elements spend a lifetime unknown, and other are of paramount importance for their emotional value." (Tiago Casanova, Emotional Space)

Tiago Casanova shows us a space with which he shares an intimate affinity is his photographic series "Emotional Space". The images capture his maternal grandparents' home, carefully explored through the lens of his camera. The images show both types of elements, those unknown and those emotionally charged, without revealing which one is which, and that is precisely what makes these images so powerful. We feel the presence of the emotional affinity, of the unknown and of the cherished, in each object, texture, in each element of the architecture. Each corner and fragment of the space conveys the relationship that has been established, and the infinite emotional ties that derived from it. Casanova lays bare a part of his private life and takes us on a journey that very well could be our own.
