The Stedelijk Museum and the Goethe Institute are proud to present a special stedelijk|forum program with journalist Susanne Kippenberger – the sister and biographer of artist Martin Kippenberger – and writer Tracy Metz, to celebrate Martin Kippenberger’s 60th birthday.

German artist Martin Kippenberger would have turned 60 years old on February 25, 2013. Kippenberger (1953-1997) was an exceptionally versatile artist who drew, painted, made installations, photographed, sculpted, and organized art events accompanied by lectures and (his own) pop music. He liked to provoke and did not spare himself – as revealed by a number of ironic self-portraits showing a beer belly. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam collection includes his triptych “Drei Häuser mit Schlitzen (Betty Ford Klinik, Stammheim, Jüdische Grundschule)” (Three Houses with Slits: Betty Ford Clinic, Stammheim, Jewish Elementary School). These canvases were painted with rapid brushstrokes and not only refer to recent German history, but also have very personal connotations. As in many of Martin Kippenberger’s works, different levels of meaning are interwoven in this triptych in a very witty way.

Martin Kippenberger died young but left an intriguing oeuvre which still serves as an inspiration for contemporary artists. The discussion between Tracy Metz and Susanne Kippenberger will shed some light on the life and work of this fascinating artist.

Susanne Kippenberger, the youngest sister of Martin Kippenberger, lives in Berlin, where she works as a journalist for the “Tagesspiegel.” She has been awarded several prizes, including the prize for journalism of the King Edward VII Foundation. In addition to numerous reports and essays, she has written six books, including a highly acclaimed biography about her brother in 2007: “Kippenberger: Der Künstler und seine Familien.” An English translation of this biography, “Kippenberger: The Artist and His Families,” was published by American publisher J&L Books in 2012.

Author and journalist Tracy Metz writes for “NRC Handelsblad” and “De Groene Amsterdammer” and is the international correspondent for the American journal “Architectural Record.” She has written a number of books, including “Zoet&Zout: Water en de Nederlanders (Sweet and Salt: Water and the Dutch),” a publication which received the Gouden Tulp award for best non fiction publication 2012. In 2006-07, she was awarded the prestigious mid-career Loeb Fellowship at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, and in 2012 she won the Groeneveld prize.
