Developing Room - What it’s like being me features a selection of digital images made by people who have a learning disability. The exhibition is presented by Talkback, an organisation dedicated to improving the life chances of people with a learning disability.

For their Developing Room project Talkback distributed digital cameras to a cross-section of people in Milton Keynes who have a learning disability - including those with very high support needs - and asked them to take photos of their everyday lives. It was essential that it was the person with a learning disability who “pushed the button” themselves, in order to show a true representation of how life looks from their perspective.

Speaking of the project, Michaela Gallimore of Talkback said: “The Developing Room project has empowered people with a learning disability who may have difficulties expressing themselves to show others what their lives are truly like. Pictures can often be more powerful than words alone. This exhibition is not so much about the quality of the photographs as the quality of life of the people taking the photographs. We have asked people to look beyond the shaky, blurry images and consider what they reveal of the life of a person who happens to have a learning disability”.

Hannah Gaunt, of MK Gallery Learning Team commented, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to host this photographic project and to support Talkback’s aims of raising awareness of the lives of those with learning disabilities. MK Gallery attracts a diverse range of visitors and is happy to welcome visits by groups with access needs, including those with a learning disability.”
