  Miquel Barceló, Penagos Prize for Drawing 2011

MAPFRE Foundation gives this award to a living artist who has paid special attention to drawing on his career.

Madrid, - A jury chaired by Alberto Manzano Martos, President of the Fundación MAPFRE, and Pablo Jiménez Burillo, Director General of the Institute of Culture, and composed of Francisco Calvo Serraller, Juan Fernandez-Rubio Layos, Leandro Navarro, Estrella de Diego, Julián Grau Santos and María Dolores Jiménez Blanco has decided to award the Drawing Penagos in his 2011 edition of the creator Spaniard Miquel Barceló .

This award was created thirty years ago to pay tribute to artist Rafael de Penagos major figure in the graphic illustration in our country during the decades of the twenties and thirties. Since then, granted annually by 2008 through an open call to the public and from that year by appointment. Recognizes the careers of living artists of national or international importance have been given special importance to the drawing in their careers.

Born in 1957 in Felanitx, Barceló and his work began to enjoy global impact upon their participation in the Biennale of Sao Paulo in 1981 and subsequently consolidated the recognition in the Documenta in Kassel and in various editions of the Venice Biennale . National Plastic Arts Prize and Prince of Asturias, intermingling in their production Barceló organic, and animal material and investigates the processes of oxidation and corrosion.

His drawings reflect the landscape and people he knows in his native Mallorca, in his lengthy stays in Africa and in his many travels.
